You mentioned that you had a baby about a month ago, so congratulations on that! But you want to try for another baby at this time, and you're wondering if your body has returned to a fertile state or if pregnancy is possible given your circumstances - you've been breastfeeding here and there, but also supplementing with formula. The first thing I want to address is that ideal birth-spacing is 2 1/2 to 3 years from the delivery of one baby to the delivery of the next. So having babies right on top of each other can affect the well-being of the baby you're growing, the mother's health, and it can also affect the well-being of the older sibling. So I suggest talking with your doctor before trying to conceive again, and based on their knowledge of your circumstances, they'll be able to help you determine when it would be right for you to have another baby. For example, there are some women who should wait a little bit longer because they have underlying health conditions that need to resolve or be managed before they get pregnant again, like obesity, hypertension, thyroid disorders - those are just a few examples. Another thing to consider is that the mother needs to lose all of the previous baby weight before she has another baby, because going into a pregnancy with extra weight can increase your chances for complications and risk in the future pregnancy. Now as for whether or not you can get pregnant given your circumstances - if a mother is exclusively breastfeeding, the baby is less than 6 months old, and the mother has not started having periods again, then the chance of getting pregnant within the first few months of the baby's life are pretty slim, like only 1% to 2%, because the hormones that support lactation suppress ovulation. But if a woman is supplementing with formula, like you mentioned in your case, or has started to have a little bit of spotting, or the evidence of the return of a period or something, or if the baby is a little bit older and starting to eat solid foods and not breastfeed as much - those are all indications or reasons to suspect that a woman's body will be returning to a fertile state. And once ovulation is happening again, then, of course, if intercourse and ovulation are timed just right, then pregnancy is possible. So it sounds like it might be the case for you, but again, I suggest consulting with your doctor before you start trying for a baby again. If, together, you decide to wait a little bit longer before conceiving, talk with them about a form of birth control that would be best for you.
